Perhaps better known as coriander and Chinese parsley, cilantro is a herb commonly found in the Mediterranean and widely used in cooking to add flavor to dishes around the world.

Beyond this, cilantro has numerous benefits for health and has healing properties that can help to prevent some diseases.

It is Highly Nutritious

Cilantro may be predominantly used as a flavoring herb but it contains a lot of different nutrients for good health. This includes calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc, magnesium, iron, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, vitamin C, vitamin A, beta carotene and vitamin K [1].


It Has Antibacterial Properties

Studies have shown that cilantro has antibacterial qualities and may even be able to fight the bacteria that causes salmonella [2]. Research published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry suggested it can even more effective than antibiotics in doing this.


It Cleanses Toxic Metals from the Body

Cilantro has the ability to cleanse toxic metals such as lead, mercury, aluminium and arsenic from the body, which can build up in the tissues and even find their way into bones. If these levels become high enough, it can lead to hormone problems and even affect how well organs can function.

Cilantro has been shown to bind itself to toxic metals and encourage them to come away from the tissues so they can leave the body naturally via urination [3].


It Promotes Heart Health

Cilantro has very few calories and absolutely no cholesterol. At the same time, it has the potential to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol levels [4].


It Has Anti Anxiety Qualities

Studies have shown that cilantro may be able to encourage a calmer state of mind, and research published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology found that taking cilantro extract had anti anxiety effects on a par with Valium (also known as diazepam), but without the side effects that can go hand in hand with taking this medication [5]. This involved fairly high levels of cilantro extract but showed promise for the herb having anti anxiety effects in general.


It Lowers Blood Sugar Levels

Studies on animals have shown that cilantro can lower blood sugar levels, and research published in the Journal of Food Sciences found that it can encourage the liver to function well and balance out blood sugar in diabetic rats [6]. The effects were so promising that researchers have even put cilantro forward as a potential treatment for diabetes if it is used regularly in cooking.


It Reduces Oxidative Stress

Cilantro has strong antioxidant qualities and can limit oxidative stress in the body, which can otherwise be a factor in the development of a wide range of conditions including heart disease, cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer’s Disease. Cilantro’s antioxidant properties help it to decrease potential damage from free radicals, and have been shown to reduce oxidative stress in the body [7].


It May Protect Against Alzheimer’s

Researchers have noted that rates of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease are lower in countries that typically consume a lot of herbs and spices (including cilantro) and studies have suggested that this may be because they help to prevent this from occurring and protect against the development [8].


It May Protect Against Colon Cancer

Cilantro may be able to reduce the potential for developing colon cancer by changing some of the risk factors that could otherwise encourage it to happen [9].
