Lemongrass has traditionally been used in Asian cooking to add a vibrant citrus taste but this is just one of its many uses.
Like most herbs, lemongrass does a lot more than just flavor your food.
The main component of lemongrass is citral, which is responsible for its distinctive lemon aroma and also brings a wide array of other benefits, especially when it comes to healing.

Studies have shown that consuming lemongrass on a regular basis can reduce LDL cholesterol levels . This helps to stop lipids building up in the blood vessels so that blood can flow easily around the body and protects against atherosclerosis as plaques are a lot less likely to form in the arteries.

Studies have shown that lemongrass has the ability to treat certain types of cancer . It may also have the power to prevent other types of cancer such as skin cancer. According to research, citral can slow the growth of hepatic cancer cells and can even stop new cancer cells from forming. Other studies have shown that citral can inhibit the growth of breast cancer .

As well as being able to fight infections in the digestive tract, lemongrass can have other benefits for this area of the body. It can protect against gastric ulcers, encourage a healthy and regular bowel function and improve digestion . Due to the anti inflammatory effects, lemongrass can also be used to treat constipation, diarrhea, nausea and even conditions such as ulcerative colitis.
Lemongrass helps to clear harmful and toxic waste products from the body to help organs such as the liver and kidneys to function effectively. It acts as a diuretic in this respect by encouraging increased urination to flush out toxins, and can also help to lower the body’s uric acid levels to protect against developing gout.

Lemongrass can treat high fevers, even those that are on the very high side . In fact, lemongrass is also known by the alternative name of “fever grass” and is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for this purpose.
Lemongrass can calm both the muscles and the nerves and this can be very conducive to getting a good night’s sleep. Studies have shown that it can have sedative and even hypnotic effects for better quality and deeper sleep .
Lemongrass is widely used in aromatherapy for its calming qualities but it can even have a role to play in improving cognitive function in neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s .

Lemongrass is generally considered safe to use but do be aware that some people can experience allergic reactions to it. This can present itself in the form of itching, rashes and a burning sensation, for example. If this happens to you, stop taking or using lemongrass straight away and seek medical advice.
